All Skate for Alzheimer's:
Caring for the Caregiver

The Grand Park Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public benefit corporation whose mission and purpose are to enhance the experience of Grand Park for the people of Los Angeles County and all visitors for generations to come.

Since its inception, the organization has been dedicated to this mission by maintaining Grand Park’s beauty, integrity, and recognition as a world-class, culturally diverse public destination space.

In line with our mission, the Grand Park Foundation is hosting “All Skate for Alzheimer’s,” a series of pop-up roller skating, and community-building informational event series geared towards bringing education and awareness on the drastic impact of Alzheimer’s Disease on the African American community.

And in recognition for all their hard work, each event’s theme will emphasize “Caring for the Caregiver” by providing Caregiver Informational and Resource Booths on Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and Brain Wellness.

About
Our Why

OUR WHY?

THE REALITY OF ALZHIEMER'S IMPACT ON THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY

FACT

African Americans are dying of Alzheimer’s at disproportionate rates.

Alzheimer’s is the fourth leading cause of death for older African Americans. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 14% of African Americans in America over the age of 65 have Alzheimer’s, compared with 10% of white people.

FACT

African Americans and Hispanics
aren’t being diagnosed.

Although the rate of Alzheimer’s and other dementias in African Americans and Hispanics is higher than in whites, they are less likely than whites to have a diagnosis of the condition.

FACT

African Americans and Hispanics are being diagnosed at the last minute.

When they are diagnosed, African Americans and Hispanics are typically diagnosed in the later stages of the disease, when they are more cognitively and physically impaired- and therefore in need

of more medical care.

FACT

“The numbers DON'T LIE!”

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, half of African Americans say they have experienced discrimination while seeking caret for a person living with Alzheimer’s.

  • Only 53% of African Americans believe that a cure for Alzheimer’s will be distributed fairly, without regard to race, color or ethnicity.

  • Only 35% of African Americans say that they are concerned about Alzheimer’s or dementia.

  • 65% of African Americans say they know somebody with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

  • 55% of African Americans think that significant loss of cognitive abilities or memory is a natural part of aging rather than a disease.

FACT

African Americans and the “Guinea Pig Effect.

The most common reasons African Americans do not want to participate in a clinical trial are:

(1) The fear of being a guinea pig, which 69% of African Americans name as a concern; and

(2) African Americans are also far more likely than other racial groups to be concerned about getting sick from treatment, with 45% describing

this as a reason.

FACT

The importance of healthy diet and living a
quality of life.

Genetic factors do not appear to account for the greater prevalence of- or the greater risk for developing – Alzheimer’s.

High blood pressure and diabetes- suspected risk factors for Alzheimer’s and other dementias- are more prevalent in the African American community, and diabetes is more prevalent in the Hispanic community.

Some studies indicate that after correcting one’s overall health and socioeconomic status, risks for developing Alzheimer’s and other dementias drastically decreases.

FACT

This is HOW WE ROLL!!

Everybody walks, runs, and ride for Alzheimer's. But here in LA, we ROLL BOUCE for African American Alzheimer's Education and Brain Wellness!!!!
